Pilar De La Cruz-Reyes

pilar picPilar De La Cruz-Reyes, MSN, RN has over 45 years of nursing experience. She began her nursing career as a staff nurse at Fresno Community Hospital and moved up the administrative ladder to become the Chief Nurse Executive at the Fresno Heart Hospital. In 2006, she retired from the hospital and began her work with the Hospital Council of Northern & Central California working on a grant to gain more Registered Nurses for the San Joaquin Valley. Through her efforts, the Central Valley was able to graduate an additional 441 nurses. She joined the California Institute for Nursing & Health Care in 2009 and served as the Diversity Director and Project Leader for the Coalition of Nursing Careers in California reaching out to minority students interested in becoming nurses. She was appointed Director of the United States University School of Nursing in 2011 in Chula Vista, California and retired from the university in July 2013 in order to return to her home in the central valley.  She just recently accepted a part-time position as the Director of the Central California Center for Excellence in Nursing at California State University, Fresno.

Pilar has a passion for nursing and began her efforts of encouraging young minority students to seek a career in nursing early in her profession. She has mentored many students and encouraged them to pursue a career in nursing telling them to never give up on their dreams. As the Diversity Director she worked with the various ethnic nursing organizations in California to “adopt a nursing school” and have their members serve as mentors for underrepresented minority nursing students.

She has been recognized by various organizations for her efforts in healthcare and diversity. In 2003, she was selected as one of the first 3 inaugural “Champions of Diversity” recipients to be recognized in California by the California Wellness Foundation. In 2005 she was recognized by the California Hospital Association for her dedication to healthcare and was also inducted into the Central California Nursing Hall of Fame in recognition for her many contributions to nursing. In 2009 she received the Prism Award from the American Organization of Nurse Executives at their annual meeting in San Antonio for her efforts at improving diversity in the nursing workforce. In addition, in 2008 she was presented the Diane F. Cooper Lifetime Achievement Award by Nurse Week magazine.
