Certificate of Deaf Culture Competence

The Certificate of Deaf Culture Competence will be awarded to students who first complete the 12-unit program of study consisting of CSDS 94S, 96,136S, and 139. Students must then pass the departmental proficiency interview in American Sign Language. The departmental exam is offered at the end of the semester each spring. Students can contact Dr. Janice Smith-Warshaw at to sign up for the proficiency interview.

Students who are majoring in other disciplines can complete the certificate that will enable them to become more marketable. The recipients of the certificate are considered fluent and possess the expressive and receptive communication skills needed to successfully communicate with deaf and hard-of-hearing children, youth, and adults.

Note: CSDS 136S has a prerequisite of CSDS 91, 92, 93, 94S
