The Advising and Career Development Center (ACDC) operates under the supervision of College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) Dean’s Office. Our current team consists of six professional advisors, two graduate advisors, three student staff, and one peer mentor. We also have a career counselor from the Career Development Center that specializes in the Health and Human Services fields.

Robert PageSmith

Robert is a Central Valley native from Porterville. Robert is a proud husband and father to three wonderful children. He enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, gardening, and staying active. As a former Division 1 athlete, his love for fitness and bodybuilding has only grown, and he has competed several times in the Masters Division.

Educational Background: Robert is the first in his family to earn a college degree and completed both of his degrees from Fresno State, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work Education in 2001. He later earned a Master of Science degree in Counseling with an option in Counseling and Students Services in 2004.

Professional Experience: Robert has 23 years of experience working in higher education advising and counseling. He specializes in academic advising and life coaching for college students and has previously worked with student athletes as an athletic advisor.

 

Chris Beck

Chris was born and raised in Fresno and wishes he spent more time reading and being productive but spends most of his free time gaming, being a big fan of Halo, Resident Evil, and Stardew Valley. He loves discovering new music, listening to favorites like Depeche Mode, The Midnight, Devotchka, and Carly Rae Jepsen, and travels for concerts constantly. Chris very much enjoys Lego, Star Wars, and especially Lego Star Wars, and has a bit of an unhealthy obsession with Kirby, wombats, and Pokémon Go, which he started playing in 2023 for cardio.

Educational Background: Chris earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and Chicano Studies and a minor in Communications with the initial goal of teaching history. During undergrad he was part of the History Student Association, Phi Alpha Theta Honor’s Society, and the COSS Honors program. After transitioning towards student affairs, he earned his Master of Science in Counseling with an option in Student Affairs and College Counseling, graduating during the 2020 pandemic.

Professional Experience: Chris has worked in a variety of student affairs roles on campus, including as an orientation leader, student assistant, in student involvement, and as an advising intern in the COSS and CSB advising centers. He was hired as staff in ACDC in 2019 and has proudly run the graduate advisor program since 2020. He has served on a variety of campus wide committees and currently serves as chief union steward for the Academic Professionals of California (APC) campus chapter and Joint Labor Council chair. Chris consistently seeks new professional development opportunities and recently presented at his first conference.

Janelle Blayney

Janelle is a Central Valley girl, born and raised in Fowler, CA. She loves watching all genres of movies with her husband John, playing all things Lego and dinosaurs with her 3-year-old son, and snuggling with her two Australian Cattle Dogs. 

Educational Background: Janelle started her undergraduate career at Reedley Community College and transferred to Fresno State with an ADT in Psychology in Fall 2014. Janelle graduated with her BA in Psychology in Spring 2016 and continued at Fresno State as a graduate student in the Student Affairs and College Counseling MS program.

Professional Experience: After graduating in Spring 2018 with her MS degree, Janelle began her career as an Academic Counselor at UC Merced working with freshmen in their First Year Advising Center. She joined our ACDC Team in June of 2019 and the rest is history.

 

Frank Castro

Frank has 4 children and enjoys spending time with his children and close family. He grew up playing sports and collecting vintage sports memorabilia from an early age and has turned that passion into a business with his oldest son. Frank also loves to eat out at nice restaurants, read inspirational and financial books, travel, and plans to visit every Major League Baseball stadium.

Educational Background: Frank is a two-time graduate of Fresno State, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology with an option in Law Enforcement and his Master of Science in Criminology. He was an EOP student and peer advisor and was an active member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Professional Experience: Frank has been an academic counselor at Fresno State since 1995. He started out working with the College of Science and Math and now has worked for the College of Health and Human Services for close to 25 years.

 

Diego Gonzalez

Diego spends a significant amount of his free time at the gym, and outside of that enjoys music and time alone.

Educational Background: Diego obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from Fresno State. He later received a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from National University.

Professional Experience: Before starting at Fresno State, Diego was an advisor at National University. He started at Fresno State in the Admission Department, where he supported incoming First-Time Freshmen and Student-Athletes. Diego has transitioned back to academic advising and now works as part of the ACDC team.

 

Keila Reyes

About:
In her free time Keila enjoys staying active, including yoga and running, and recently completed her first marathon. She enjoys reading and spending time with her dog Bo. Keila is also an avid fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Educational Background: Keila received an Associate Degree in Social Science from West Hills College Lemoore and transferred to Fresno State where she earned her Bachelors degree in Communicative Sciences and Deaf Studies with an option in Speech-Language Pathology. Keila later earned her Master’s Degree in Counseling with an emphasis in option in Student Affairs and College Counseling.

Professional Experience: Keila is a student affairs professional that is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for students. She has completed several trainings, including Gender and Identities 101 and the Vet Net Ally program. Prior to joining the team in ACDC she worked in the Fresno State Admissions office.

Kalue Yang

Lead Graduate Advisor

Education: Kalue is a proud alumna of Fresno State, where she earned her B.A. in Psychology as a Smittcamp President's Honors Scholar and participated in the Psychology Honors Program. Currently, Kalue is completing her M.S. in Counseling with an option in Student Affairs and College Counseling at Fresno State. 
 
Experience: This is Kalue's second year as a Graduate Intern Academic Advisor for the Academic and Career Development Center (ACDC), where she has advised hundreds of students and played a leadership role in Dog Days Orientation alongside the ACDC staff. Before stepping into this role, she served as a Fresno State campus tour guide, leading tours for individuals, families, and groups while showcasing the university’s culture and resources. Kalue also worked as an ambassador for the University Studies Abroad Consortium at Fresno State, providing personalized guidance to students exploring study abroad opportunities and leading outreach efforts at campus events.
 
Personal: Kalue has a passion for traveling—an incredibly expensive hobby she hopes to sustain more easily in the future with a "big-girl job." During her undergraduate studies, she spent a semester abroad in South Korea, sparking a deep love for exploring new cultures and destinations. She is also an avid anime fan, as evidenced by the Demon Slayer figurines displayed in her office. In her free time, she enjoys a good hike, a solid leg day at the gym, and staying actively involved in the Hmong community—sometimes a little too involved, as setting boundaries is still a work in progress!

 

Cynthia Ramirez

About: Cynthia loves playing video games, whether it’s on her Xbox, her classic Nintendo DS, or her trusty old Wii. When she’s not gaming, she enjoys quality time with her significant other and younger cousin.

Educational Background: Cynthia is a proud transfer student from COS, where she earned multiple associate degrees. She continued her academic journey at Fresno State, earning a B.A. in Psychology. Currently, she is pursuing her M.S. in Counseling with an option in Student Affairs and College Counseling at Fresno State.

Professional Experience: Prior to joining ACDC as the Graduate Intern, Cynthia's work experience began at College of the Sequoias (COS) at the Financial Aid Office, Work Study Office, and gave tours to incoming students! With her interest in supporting special populations, she began working with Fresno State's TRIO Student Support Services Disability program that serves low-income, first-generation, students with disabilities in 2022 first as the Program Assistant and now as the Advisor Intern!

Nora Diaz-Vasquez

Nora Diaz-Vasquez has over 15 years of experience in the field of career counseling. She joined Fresno State in 2013 and currently serves as a Career Counselor and liaison to the College of Health and Human Services. She is also an advisor for the Hispanic Business Student Association (HBSA).

As a Certified Career Services Provider (CSP), Nora serves as a resource for students and alumni as they work toward achieving their personal, academic, and career goals. In Spring 2018, she was awarded the 2017-2018 Outstanding Advisor Award.

Education

Nora earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration – International Business option, and a Master of Science in Counseling – Counseling and Student Services option from Fresno State.
