Dr. Barrows has been on faculty since 2015. He graduated from California State University,
Fresno with a BS in Physical Therapy in 1987 and a tDPT from Evidence in Motion in
2015. Dr. Barrows has nearly 4 decades of clinical experience in the area of Outpatient
orthopedics. Additionally, he has over 35 years as a clinic director and then practice
owner. In addition to his tDPT, Dr. Barrows has extensive certifications including
Maitland, McKenzie, level III NAIOMT (North American Institute of Orthopedic Manual
Therapy) and is a certified ergnonomics specialist (CEAS) as well as a certified instructor
for Work Steps and a certified instructor for Epic Lift Capacity - evaluating training
and certifying patients in biomechanics and ergonomics for return to work.
Dr. Barrows has experience in teaching in the area of orthopedics, manual therapy,
spine, biomechanics and musculoskeletal disorders including with the Institute of
Physical Arts. Dr. Barrows teaches PHTH 517 and PHTH 518 - Orthopedic Management in
Physical Therapy I and II, PHTH 508 Foundations of Patient Assessment and Clinical
Management in Physical Therapy II, PHTH 533 Functional Kinesiology for Physical Therapists
and is a Clinical Instructor for PHTH 554 - Clinical Learning which is our Integrated
Clinical Experience on-campus Musculoskeletal Care Center. Dr. Barrows maintains his
currency in teaching through clinical practice and continuing education in the areas
of spine, sports medicine, occupational medicine and return to work, functional capacity,
gait and gait mechanics, manual therapy, functional anatomy and orthopedics.
In addition to teaching and clinical practice, Dr. Barrows serves his community through
local high school career technical education and regional occupational programs and
the Leukemia Society and serves his profession as a previous Site Coordinator of Clinical
Education and previous president of the San Joaquin District of the California Physical
Therapy Association. Dr. Barrows has been recognized for his teaching with the Northern
California Clinical Education Consortium CI of Excellence Award and for his contributions
to Fresno State's Department of Physical Therapy with the CSU Fresno College of Health
and Human Serivces Hero Award.
