Dr. Caio V. Messias Sarmento is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at California State University, Fresno. He holds a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Kansas Medical Center and has a strong academic background in human anatomy and chronic musculoskeletal pain. Originally from Brazil, he brings international experience in healthcare and education, having worked and studied in Brazil, England, and Japan.
At Fresno State, Dr. Sarmento oversees the Gross Anatomy Laboratory and teaches cadaver-based anatomy in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. His research focuses on chronic pain and anatomy education. He has published extensively on topics such as fibromyalgia, systemic inflammation, and pain perception, and actively presents his work on anatomy education at national and international conferences.
Dr. Sarmento is an engaged member of the American Association for Anatomy, where he served on the Publication Committee and contributes to the Anatomy Scholars Program as part of its development team. He also serves on a national task force of the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy focused on advancing research in academic physical therapy.
Outside academia, Dr. Sarmento enjoys road biking, hiking, and traveling, embracing the outdoors and diverse cultures. His passion for learning new languages further reflects his commitment to global engagement and lifelong learning.
