Abstract |
This project examines the barriers to physical activity among registered nurses in a Central Valley medical group. This paper argues that although registered nurses are active in their occupational physical demands which include walking, standing, lifting, and moving, registered nurses are often not physically healthy. With the Theory of Planned Behaviors (TPB) as a theoretical framework, this project utilized a quantitative survey format through Qualtrics software to evaluate registered nurses’ responses at Saint Agnes Medical Center. The project focused on evaluating the lifestyle satisfaction of registered nurses; comparing past and present physical activity level among registered nurses; discussing the barriers preventing registered nurses from being physically active and preferences for workplace wellness services among registered nurses. By analyzing the result, findings suggest that past physical activity levels were higher compared to current activity levels among registered nurses. Additionally, participants facing greater emotional and physical barriers tend to report lower satisfaction with their work-life balance. The likelihood of participating in a physical activity program was not significantly linked to work-life balance satisfaction or past/current physical activity levels. Notably, registered nurses’ likelihood to participate in the physical activity program if gym membership discount or other incentives were offered was significantly correlated. After identifying these barriers on nurses' ability to maintain physical activity. It can be concluded that a wellness and fitness program is an effective way in helping registered nurses being physical healthy.
