Maybo Heu, DNP, FNP-C, MSN DNP: California State University, Fresno Project Title: Will Workshops on a Diabetes Toolkit Improve Diabetes Care in the Hmong Community? |
Abstrac |
This project aims to investigate the effectiveness of an existing diabetes toolkit that has been translated into Hmong. The project population included Hmong diabetic patients 40 to 75 years of age, of all genders, who can speak and understand the Hmong language, have a Hemoglobin A1c of 6.5% or more within three months of the project, and are residents of Fresno County. The goal of the project was to determine if diabetes toolkit workshops would be effective in improving Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in Hmong diabetic patients. A nurse practitioner at the clinic recruited project participants. The diabetes toolkit used in this study is the Wisconsin Department of Public Health Diabetes Self-Care Guide. The interactive workshops included a presentation on the toolkit using a Hmong interpreter. Project participants also completed a log sheet to track changes in the patients' physical activity, diet adherence, and medication adherence. To be included in the final data analysis, project participants must have attended
two diabetes toolkit workshops. Although the project started with ten project participants,
only three participants attended both workshops (n = 3). The Wilcoxon Non-Parametric
statistical test was The other project variables, including diet adherence, regular and strength physical activity adherence, and medication adherence, could not be tested due to insufficient data collection. More research needs to be conducted to determine if linguistically appropriate diabetes toolkit workshops can improve diabetes management in the Hmong community. |
