Dr. Jenelle N. Gilbert is a Professor and is currently serving as the Department Chair
for the Department of Kinesiology. Dr. Gilbert earned degrees in Physical Education
(B.P.E. Honours), Human Kinetics (M.A.), Education (B.Ed. – PE), and Education (Ph.D.)
from the University of Ottawa. Her research examines the stressors and coping strategies
of collegiate coaches, as well as performance enhancement interventions with student-athletes
and other performers. This latter research line uses a formal curriculum, which is
now called the Mental Toughness UNIFORM to teach sport psychology skills. Dr. Gilbert is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant
(CMPC) with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. In addition to mentoring
students/professionals who wish to become a CMPC, she also regularly consults with
high school and collegiate athletes and coaches, and other performers within the community.
She has presented and published in the areas of sport psychology intervention, stress
and coping, and elementary physical education. Dr. Gilbert was a recipient of the
Provost’s Award for Promising New Faculty in Spring 2007 and the Outstanding Adviser
Award in 2013. She has co-presented with 49 different graduate students and published
with 16; all of these are peer-reviewed scholarship. Her students have won the Outstanding
Thesis or Project Award (2024, 2022, 2021, 2019, 2018, 2016, 2015, and 2003), the
College of Health and Human Services Graduate Dean's Medal (2022, 2018, 2015, 2005,
and 2004), and the Graduate Research and Creative Activities Support Award several
times.
