Dr. Monica Rivera is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at California State University, Fresno.  She received her Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy at the University of California San Francisco/San Francisco State University in Motor Development and a Master of Science in Neurologic Physical Therapy from Samuel Merritt College. Her entry level physical therapy certificate is from UCLA Hospitals and Clinics. She has 25 years of clinical practice across the continuum of care in pediatrics and acute care management of adult neurologic disorders.

Courses Instructor:  Motor Development, Applied Neuroscience, Physical Therapy Management of Adult Neurology II and Applied Pathology in Physical Therapy.

Dr. Rivera engages in pro bono services to adult and pediatric individuals with neurologic disability, integrating students/courses to serve various populations in Fresno County.

Dr. Rivera’s interests include opera, gardening, wine making, and is cultivating a new vineyard.  She appreciates history, especially ancient, and enjoys traveling to sites of antiquity and museums.

Research Interest

Dr. Rivera's research centers in two areas.  The development of a multimodal intervention program for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. This line of esearch focuses on fall prevention, postural control and reducing festinating patterns, especially during turning.

Dr. Rivera initated the Infant Motor Perceptual Laboratory housed in the Kremen School of Education.  The lab's initative is to uncover the interaction between infant mobility (self-initiated and with devices) and spatial attention in typically developing infants and infants with motor disability. Dr. Rivera has received two funded grants for the lab.
