FAQs

Are athletic trainers the same as personal trainers?

No, athletic training is not the same profession as personal training.  An athletic trainer is an expert on recognizing, evaluating, and treating musculoskeletal injuries.  Athletic trainers must receive a bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited athletic training education program and pass a comprehensive exam administered by the Board of Certification (BOC).  Once certified, athletic trainers must meet any of the requirements of the state and meet ongoing continuing education requirements.  Click here for a more in-depth comparison of the differences between athletic trainers and personal trainers.

How many students are accepted into the program each year?

We typically admit a cohort of 20-24 each academic year.  This results in 40-48 athletic training students in the program each year. Variations in the numbers accepted are typically due to access to a sufficient number of preceptors to keep the student:AT ratio low.

What is the time commitment for the clinical portion of the Athletic Training Program?

We have a clinical practicum course students take each semester.  That course requires a minimum of 20 hours per week and a maximum of 35 hours per week.

Am I able to have a job while in the program?

Several students do maintain jobs while in the Program.  We do require that your coursework, including your clinical classes (practica), are your priority.  Because clinical hours are variable an employer needs to be willing to accommodate this variability.  As best possible, we ask that clinical preceptors develop student schedules at least two weeks in advance so students who work can have ample time to notify their employer.

How many of your graduating students find employment in their chosen field?

Our alums have taken positions in a variety of settings.  About 50% of the students each year desire to pursue a masters degree upon completion of their undergraduate program.  We have a very good track record of helping students find these positions, many are within high caliber prestigious institutions. Others may take positions within high schools or clinics and a portion of our alums pursue another professional program such as physical therapy or physician assistant.
