Graduate School Application Procedures and Requirements

For international students: For consideration for admission, CSDS requires a minimum TOEFL Total score of 100.

To apply for graduate study in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Deaf Studies, a two-step process is required including 1) applying to the University and 2) applying to the department. Both steps are completed through Cal State Apply.

1. Submit your application online via Cal State Apply

Please view CSU Application and Details and Deadlines.  You will select either the Masters Degree in Speech-Language Pathology or the Masters Degree in Deaf Education, depending on the degree program you are applying for.

2. Submit one official transcript from each college that you attended after high school to the university

Information about submitting your transcripts to the university can be found on the Transcripts Requirement page.  Do not send transcripts to the department office.

3. Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

Please submit/have your scores sent to the University.

You will be required to submit the following online via Cal State Apply.

1. Statement of Purpose (aka: Letter of Intent)

All students applying to the Graduate Program in Speech-Language Pathology must submit a Statement of Purpose. Please limit the length of your letter to approximately 1 page, if possible. Your statement of purpose to the Graduate Committee should include:

    a.  an explanation of your interest in the field of Speech-Language Pathology,

    b.  a brief description of previous experience, paid or volunteer, in speech-language pathology or related fields (emphasis should be placed on human service(s) and/or educational experience),

    c.  your reasons for pursuing graduate studies,

    d.  your future goals (whether your orientation is clinical, administrative, or if you have research and/or doctoral program goals),  

    e.  any goals specific to ethnically diverse (e.g., multilingual/multicultural) or special needs populations.

2. Letters of Recommendation

Once you enter Cal State Apply, you will be asked to provide the names and email addresses of 3 individuals who will provide letters of recommendation electronically.

3. Observation Hours

If you are applying to our Speech-Language Pathology program, you need to submit documentation of 25 hours of Supervised Clinical Observations. If you have completed your hours, please upload the documentation when you apply. If you have not completed your hours, you will be asked to provide documentation before starting the program. link to observation hours form, if needed

4. Prerequisite Tracking Form

If you are applying to our Speech-Language Pathology program and your BA degree is from another field, please submit the SLP Prerequisite Tracking Form

In addition to completing the CSU application, the following documents are also required via Cal State Apply

1. Statement of Purpose (also known as the letter of intent).

  a.  an explanation of your interest in the field of Deaf Education,

  b.  a brief description of previous experience, paid or volunteer, in deaf education or related fields (emphasis should be placed on educational experience),

  c.  your reasons for pursuing graduate studies,

  d.  your future goals (whether your orientation is an Early Interventionist or Deaf Education Teacher ),  

  e.  any goals specific to ethnically diverse (e.g., multilingual/multicultural) or special needs populations.

2. Letter of Recommendation 

Once entering 'Cal State Apply', you will be asked to provide the names and email addresses of three individuals who will provide letters of recommendation electronically. 

3. In addition, it is recommended that applicants upload the following: 

  • CV/Resume
  • ASPLI Score
  • Certificate of Clearance
  • T.B. Clearance
